heartstrings

The drive up interstate 5 is boring. Very boring. The Five was built before the highway/freeway planning commission knew of road hypnosis-- meaning, it is very flat and very straight. This was my first trip without my sister by my side, and as such even more boring than ever. Naturally my imagination took over, and came up with a game way more complicated than my first.

The premise is pretty simple. It's a puzzle game resembling Shadow of the Colossus, a game that I have never played but have had the object explained to me at least three times. The player is a a large raven, the world is a murky woodland and high peaks, and the enemy is a group of demons. Each demon lives within a certain woodland creature, and it is up to the raven to figure out who is possessed and then to exorcise the demon using a spell taught to him by the Old Raven. Once the demon is brought out, it is a huge, terrible thing somewhere between animal and machine. The Raven's few tools against it are its beak and the demon's weakness-- exposed workings, like strings, knobs, levers, and big eyes just asking to be poked. The Raven can also enlist the help of clean creatures, such as wolves or a herd of deer, if it helps them first. A demon can only be killed permanently if its heart string is pulled out. The ultimate goal is to collect each demon's heart string.

Game play would be open and non linear. As Raven you can fly about the whole of your wood, the surrounding mountains and the farmland lower in the valley. You can pick up food or coins to drop in the local peanut vending machines . Flight would be gliding with a button press for flapping, another for alighting and take off, massive changes in up/down would result in a steep climb or a straight dive, another button for pecking and pulling, and a final fourth for grabbing with your claws.

i am so happy you posted! and can you please go into graphics? that game sounds amazing! have you done any art for this idea yet?

No I haven't done any art for it yet. I had a pretty clear idea of what the demons would be like but not a specific demon.
The world would be 3D, and look something like Vermont, but with actual mountains instead of hills, in late fall. So, big, bright red and orange trees, some bare ones, dry grassy clearings, lakes, and streams. Probably all stylized, though I'm not sure in what way.

that sounds amazing. Long car drives are the best for mental wanderings. I have precious little time for wanderings, and it makes me sad.

ooh, Vermont! I would totally play this game, and will be on the lookout for demons when I'm at school in a few weeks...

the 5 is hellish. whenever I'm on it I find myself thinking about dystopia. but once you merge onto the 101 and get to redwood country -- bliss.

Tati, I wish we could have wandered together. :-/
