"Spanking the Future"

I thought this was kind of a cool editorial on the importance of maintaining a sense of astonishment at our technological advances, and it set me thinking about the potential evolution of some sort of Geek Spirituality...

yes! This is sweet. There is definitely a lack of awe. I think about computer animation every once in awhile like this. I find myself denouncing the horrid banality it is used for, but again, its incredible that you can make whole worlds, with their own laws, that can exist outside of the range of a frame, that when it is over, parts (if not the whole) can be revisited, used like old bits found in a junk shop, because it exists somehow...

wow... yeah, see, I'd never even thought about that before it and it *does* fill me with awe.
I trip out too on the way that music, art, literature and film are so easily accessible, wind-blown to all shores across this great ocean that is the Internet. and communication-wise, even with social networking sites as dumb as they are, it's pretty astonishing how easy it is to keep in touch with people, to be able to almost instantly communicate with people thousands of miles away, like we do on this blog.
even just what we can do with music is amazing! I love me some electronic beats!
what is scary is how often technology gets used for, well, really scary and/or random stuff... like blowing people up and making spider-goats...

Ah the internet. It's been reinventing the old ways of doing things, but eventually it will get up and become something bigger, greater and stranger. We just have to hope that it isn't strangled by old media.
