book maze

Yesterday I started reading The Library at Night, an eclectic (and eccentric) exploration by Alberto Manguel of the meaning of libraries. It's a sort of dreamlike voyage through a gigantic floating labyrinth made of books. And full of strange facts. Just thought I'd share this one:

In the Library of Congress's catalogues, the subject headings include such curious categories as:

~ banana research
~ bat binding
~ boots and shoes in art
~ chickens in religion and folklore
~ sewage: collected works

I am particularly perplexed by Sewage: Collected Works. I suppose the "collected works" part was to make it sound classy?

So it would seem, unless Sewage is actually an author, who is important enough to have their own section.

Any insight into what the heck bat binding might be?

I know about bat banding (like bird banding) but no idea what binding would be. (Imagines tiny fairy books bound in bat wing leather)

Ooohh. Like fairy grimoires and alchemist's manuals...

I was just imagining someone wrapping up a bat really tight in a blanket, like people wrap up babies. Maybe it has something to do with baseball?
